  • My first foray in ringing the bell for the Salvation Army in front of the Post Office began in 1999. We had not yet moved here but had purchased some land with the hope of building in the next year. As a new member of Rotary I plunged into volunteering to ring the bell. What a surprise. Instead of avoiding you like those of us from away would do when we passed a bell ringer in the big city, in Damariscotta people stopped and talked to you and were most generous in their contributions. I enjoyed it so much that I have been ringing the bell ever since, as we say in Rotary, "Once a week, every week". Look for me on Tuesday morning, right after our meeting.

It's apprpriate we do this in front of the Post Office...you know, "through rain, sleet and snow etc.

Isn't it interesting how our little Maine town's feel so different than elsewhere? Is it the people or the place, or a little bit of both?
