  • The town of Herculaneum in 1812 is depicted on a mural by Oscar Berninghaus in the Missouri State Capitol Building in Jefferson City, Missouri.  The mural depicts the town located on the Mississippi River.  The large, white limestone bluff that towers above the town was the site of the first shot tower west of Pittsburgh, PA.  Lead shot produced at the shot tower was used in the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812.
