Two years ago when we had feet more of snow, I was driving our Surburban down 9500 from Hwy 22 towards 1000. It was particularly icy. The roads weren't well plowed due to the continual snow. I met up with a car headed towards 22 which took his share of the road out of the middle and showed no signs of slowing down or moving over. I put my foot on the break to slow down in order to move into the snow on the side of the road to pass this oncoming vehicle. Well, the break and the icy road sent me right into the ditch at a fairly good angle.
I called my husband who has a 4WD, but it was only a truck and wasn't heavy enough to even move the Surburban. Someone in a large Surburban stopped and spent almost an hour and who knows how many gallons of gas trying to get us out. He was able to pull us forward, but was not able to pull us up and out of the ditch. We don't know his name, he never asked for any money and was very apologetic when he had to leave us there stuck on the side of the road. This is the work of someone in a strong, caring community.
We had called AAA, and they arrived shortly after the Surburban left. Unfortunately he was driving a small pickup truck and even though it was a 4WD - it wasn't heavy enough to pull us out. The driver was fairly young and he was determined to give it his best shot so he started to hook up - another sign of a stong, caring community.
Before AAA got hooked up, someone who lives between 950 and Hyw 31 could see the problem from their home. He came to the rescue in a big ole tractor. He hooked us up and in just a matter of one good slow pull forward, he was able to pull us forward and up on the road at the same time.
We didn't and still don't know any of the people who helped us out that cold snowy night. But we are very grateful and hope to one day return the favor to someone in a similar situation. These people all sacrificed their time to come out into the cold and help strangers. This is what a caring community does - it comes to the aid of those in need even when it's not convenient. This is done one on one by the type of people a small community attracts. We are happy to be living in Victor.
